VIRTUAL POPULATION

The Virtual Population: High-Resolution Anatomical Models

Available through the IT'IS Foundation for scientific purposes only

The Virtual Population consists of ten highly detailed anatomical whole-body models of adults and children. The models or numerical phantoms are based on high-resolution MR images of healthy volunteers. All of their approximately 80 organs and tissues are represented by three-dimensional CAD objects yielding a high level of detail.

The models have a body mass and height which is typical for their age range.

The CAD format of the organs of the models allows meshing at arbitrary resolution without loss of detail and small features due to multiple sampling.

Ordering the models

The models are provided on two DVDs, each of which contains the Virtual Family Tool and four models in CAD format and in a generic voxel format at various resolutions. The CAD models can be used with SEMCAD X (light version provided on DVD), and their voxel versions can be used with other simulation software.

Please note that using the CAD models with the Virtual Family Tool requires a 64bit operating system (Windows XP, Windows Vista, or Windows 7) and at least 4GB of RAM. Depending on their resolution, the memory requirements for loading and processing the voxel models can be very high.

The Virtual Family DVD contains the models Duke, Ella, Billie and Thelonious, and the Virtual Classroom DVD contains the models Louis, Eartha, Dizzie and Roberta. These models and the Virtual Family Tool are provided to the scientific community for research purposes free of charge. The models Fats and Glenn will be made available in 2012. To order the Virtual Population DVDs, please complete the downloadable form (see below) and then click Print Form to print the order form. Then fax it to +41 44 245 9699, or post it to our postal address:

The development of the models was carried out in cooperation with the Center for Devices and Radiological Health of the U. S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), Silver Spring, MD, USA; the Austrian Research Centers GmbH, Seibersdorf, Austria; the University of Houston, TX, USA; the Hospital of the Friedrich-Alexander-University (FAU), Erlangen, Germany; and Siemens Medical Solutions, Erlangen, Germany.

The Mobile Manufacturers Forum, the GSM Association and SPEAG funded the development of the two adult and of two of the child models. The German Federal Office for Radiation Protection (BfS) supported the development of four additional child models. The models were validated by scientists at FDA (USA).

Further development and significant improvements to the anatomical fidelity of the child models could be made thanks to the contributions from The Netherlands Organization for Health Research and Development (ZonMw). The models were reviewed by pediatricians of the Erasmus MC-Daniel den Hoed Cancer Center. The Swiss National Research Programme NRP 57 “Non-Ionising Radiation – Health and Environment” funded the development of the pregnant models.
