NOVEL METHODS

Cancer research at the University of Alabama

“This line of research provides a unique opportunity to develop new and safe targeted therapies that kill cancer cells without collateral damage.”

Prof. Boris Pasche, Director Division of Hematology/Oncology, University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA

Novel Methods

Background

Common applications of EMF in cancer therapies such as ablation (heating the malignant tissue to > 50°C) and hyperthermia (sensitizing the tumor by heating the tissue to 41–43°C) focus and localize the energy on the tumor site while avoiding harm to the surrounding healthy body tissue. As novel EMF-based methods and continuing progress in basic cancer research are leading to discoveries of new approaches in cancer therapies, IT’IS has initiated and actively pursued mission-related research projects based on these discoveries 1) to establish the interaction mechanism of low EMF with biological structures and processes and 2) to explore new avenues for tumor treatment.

Foundation-Initiated Projects

  • Investigation of the mechanisms behind the observed effects of amplitude-modulated fields on cell proliferation and tumor growth in cancer patients, in vivo, and in vitro in close cooperation with the Comprehensive Cancer Center of the University of Alabama at Birmingham, USA. These effects will be investigated at another independent laboratory to avoid any bias and to accelerate the research in order to further optimize this novel treatment modality.
  • Investigation of the effect of modulated RF (1900 MHz) on photosensitizers applied in PDT at the University of Zurich.
  • Detailed study of the underlying mechanism of electroporation in cancer treatment in the framework of the COST Action TD1104 “European network for development of electroporation-based technologies and treatments”
