ETH Zurich D-ITET Masters Students and VetClinics-UZH Faculty Visit Zurich43

Master students from the Department of Information Technology and Electrical Engineering (D-ITET) of the ETH Zurich visited Zurich43 for a seminar on "Non-ionising radiation: a health risk from low doses?". The visit was part of the course "Energy, Resources, Environment: Risks and Prospects" taught by Dr. Thomas Flüeler. The students toured the IT’IS research facilities, with stops at the Yellow Chamber, ICEy and TDS probes, and the AllyPally phantoms. The seminar continued with presentations from representatives of the VetSuisse faculty and Ärztinnen und Ärzte für Umweltschutz and concluded with time for questions and discussion.

Two IT'IS Papers Supporting NIEHS NTP Study of Cell Phone RF Radiation and Carcinogensis in Rats Published Online

Two papers in support of the preliminary findings of the US National Toxicology Program (NTP) Study on Cell Phone Radiofrequency Radiation (RFR) and Carcinogensis have recently been published online in IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility.

The exposure systems used in the study, which were designed, manufactured, and installed by the IT'IS Foundation, are described in detail in Capstick et al. 2017 (Myles H. Capstick, Sven Kuehn, Veronica Berdinas-Torres, Yijian Gong, Perry F. Wilson, John M. Ladbury, Galen Koepke, David L. McCormick, James Gauger, Ronald L. Melnick, and Niels Kuster, IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility, Volume 59, Issue 4, pp. 1041–1052. August, 2017, online 17 March 2017, doi: 10.1109/TEMC.2017.2649885). The exposure systems used in the experiment – 21 reverberation chambers – provided maximum homogeneity and control over the RFR signals used, with reliable monitoring of all device conditions and environmental parameters.

The detailed life-time dosimetry analysis for rodents exposed in the NTP reverberation exposure systems is described in Gong et al. 2017 (Yijian Gong, Myles H. Capstick, Sven Kuehn, Perry F. Wilson, John M. Ladbury, Galen Koepke, David L. McCormick, Ronald L. Melnick, and Niels Kuster, IEEE Transactions on Electromagnetic Compatibility, online 17 March 2017, doi:. In this study, the well-controlled exposure of individually housed, unrestrained mice at 1900 MHz and rats at 900 MHz was characterized. Whole-body, peak spatial, and organ-specific absorption rates (SAR) as well as the uncertainty and variation due to the exposure environment, differences in the growth rates, and animal posture were assessed. The detailed dosimetric results provide a reference for studies of long-term biological effects of exposure and empower comparisons with other studies.

The IT’IS Foundation can adapt this exposure system design for any study size to provide the same quality and system and dosimetry reliability. Exposure systems for in vitro studies can also be provided. For more information, please contact Myles Capstick at capstick@itis.ethz.ch.

Zurich43 Retreat 2017 at Pilatus Kulm - Communication

Twenty-five Zurich43 associates and three IT'IS Foundation board members gathered in the historic Hotel Pilatus-Kulm high above Luzern 30 – 31 January 2016 for their annual retreat, this year on communication. The goal of the two-day retreat was to find ways to improve communication skills across various target groups, channels, and markets, both within Z43 and with the outside world.
